Why is TSI publishing a Wire Rod Price Change Index?

The increasing volatility of steel prices has created more and more demands for a robust price change index to use as a basis for negotiations.

Even though the automotive industry has an already established model of using price change indexes, the need was identified for an independent 3rd party to collect and publish data.

It is anticipated that the index will be widely used by wire rod producers and fastener manufacturers who wish to index-link their physical pricing arrangements through quarterly contracts with tier one auto manufacturers.

Where has the data for the index come from?

TSI will be supported from data provided by the German fastener manufacturers association (DSV) and its associate members; the most representative fastener manufacturers in the market today. The intention is to expand the data providing group to include key industry participants in Italy, France and Spain. Anyone who deals with this specific grade of wire rod is welcome to apply to become a TSI Data Provider for this index.

Why a price change index and not a standard index?

Experiences from around 2004 up until now show that with regard to the development of prices for cold heading and cold extrusion steel wire, no correlation is possible with other steels or materials. Therefore, a special price change index was established by DSV in conjunction with BMW for low carbon and medium carbon boron containing steel wire rod.

How will the data collation process work?

Data Providers sign up to take part in the index confidentially. Each month, where they have seen a change in the cost of the product, Data Providers inform TSI of that price change. That data will be revenue-weighted to provide the final ‘price change’ index value, with October 2010 as the base period.

How is the Wire Rod Index different from TSI's other indices?

Unlike TSI's other indices that are created from individual pricing data points and published on either a daily or weekly basis, TSI's Boron Alloyed Wire Rod Index is published as a Price Change Index (€/tonne) on a monthly basis.

How can I receive TSI's Wire Rod Index on a monthly basis?

The annual subscription for TSI's Wire Rod Price Change Index is €350 per annum. To start receiving this price today please contact Vaseem Karbhari on info@thesteelindex.com
